Rhone, France

The North is renowned for its Syrah-dominant red wines. Steep, terraced, sun-facing vineyards contribute to the intense character of wines like Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Cornas. These wines exhibit powerful structure, firm tannins, and complex aromas of black fruit, spice, and often a smoky, gamey note. Small quantities of aromatic white wines, primarily from Viognier, are produced in appellations like Condrieu.
The South is characterized by its Mediterranean climate and Grenache-based blends. These wines, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, are typically full-bodied, with softer tannins and ripe red fruit flavors. "Garrigue" aromas, reminiscent of wild herbs, are common. The South also produces substantial amounts of rosé. White wines, often blends of Marsanne and Roussanne, offer richness and texture.
